Heavy Metals in Human Hair Samples from Silesia Province: the Influence of Sex, Age and Smoking Habit

Over 90 hair samples were collected from 67 healthy males and 26 healthy females in Silesia, Poland. The samples were analysed with DPASV for the simultaneous determination of several elements and with FAAS for all elements after wet digestion. The average values of element concentrations in the hair samples are presented. We observed that the hair of males showed consistently higher levels of lead, cadmium, zinc and copper than the hair of females of the same age group and from the same area. There were some significant changes in hair Cd, Cu, Zn and Pb concentrations, depending on the place of residence of the donors.
